Kim Doherty grew up in New Hampshire hiking and skiing in the White Mountains. She received undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNH in Counseling, Communications and English. She lives in San Diego with her husband and three children. Her passion is painting scenes of beauty. Nature is the inspiration for many of her works. She has painted extensively in San Diego, Laguna Beach, Paso Robles, Big Sur, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe.
Kim is a modern impressionist oil painter with a colorist influence. She paints en plein air landscape to capture the beauty and light of a specific place in time. Many of these paintings are then translated into larger studio works. She also loves still life, floral, and architectural paintings, which provide endless possibilities for design and color.
Her inspiration is from the French and American Impressionists. For the past 16 years she has been fortunate to study oil painting with internationally collected artists: Maria Bertran, Cynthia Britain, Jill Carver, Mark Kerckhoff, Kevin Macpherson, Dreama Tolle-Perry, and Jeff Yeomans. These artists have greatly influenced her artistic style. She fulfilled one of her goals to travel with her family to Europe to paint with Maria Bertran in Provence. For several weeks she explored Paris, Chamonix, Cinque Terre,Ville Franche Sur Mer and Provence.
She is a current member of the California Art Club and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. She is a former President of the Rancho Sante Fe Art Guild. She exhibits her paintings at galleries in San Diego and Laguna Beach. For years she has also exhibited her original paintings in juried exhibitions in Rancho Sante Fe, La Jolla and Coronado. She was chosen to have her artwork represented in state parks at Lake Tahoe and The Valley of Fire. She teaches oil painting both privately and to small groups. Her work is held in private and corporate collections.
Artist Statement
My inspiration is nature. I am drawn to all types of landscapes: oceans, vineyards, mountains and flowers. Each painting holds special meaning to me. The places I paint are locations that bring me joy and peace. My hope is that this feeling will transfer to you and that you will find your own connection to the art. Many collectors of my work have commented that their paintings make them happy and that they are able to enjoy a feeling of being in that location every day from their own home or business. I am passionate about painting and love the continuous journey and challenge of creating new pieces. Art is about emotion and if emotion is reflected to the viewer in my work then I have succeeded.
